School of Medicine Course & Clerkship Pages

The Pathology-Pathophysiology course is a multi-disciplinary educational effort taught by practicing physicians in varied fields of Medicine, including Pathology, Internal Medicine (and its subspecialties), Medical Genetics, Family & Community Medicine, Neurology, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Dermatology. Course I (Fall semester) primarily focuses on fundamental principles of disease and culminates with the application of those principles to disorders of the Cardiovascular system. Course II (Spring semester) reinforces and builds upon the fundamental principles as they relate to disorders of the remaining organ systems of the body (e.g. Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, etc.). Similar to the “step” approach to medical licensing by the USMLE Board Examinations, the students’ education at NYMC proceeds in a step-wise fashion. Together with the entire pre-clinical curriculum, this course is intended to provide students with a strong foundation for USMLE Step I. More importantly, the course strives to allow students to develop the knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and skills necessary for effective participation as members of the multi-disciplinary healthcare teams during the clinical curriculum (3rd and 4th year), and future success beyond medical school.
