APA (7/e) Style Guide

The 7^th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association contains everything social and behavioral science researchers, writers, and editors need to produce well-organized, clear, readable, and authoritative manuscripts. 

The library has one print copy on 1-day reserve at the Main Library. You can ask for it at the front desk.  

This guide is based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Seventh Edition. It provides an overview of some core concepts in the manual but should NOT be used as a replacement for the full manual, which you can borrow from the library or purchase here.

You need to cite when:

• Using a direct quotation, even if it is in quotation marks.
• Using facts that are not common knowledge (i.e. what the reader can reasonably be expected to know).
• Paraphrasing or rewriting the author’s ideas.
• Summarizing the data or argument of an author.
• Using the key words or phrases of the author or using synonyms.
• Writing a sentence that mostly consists of your own thoughts but makes a reference to another author’s ideas.

 When in doubt, err on the side of caution, and cite.
