Biography

Anson R. Flower (1849-1909), a successful businessman and philanthropist, founded the Flower Free Surgical Hospital with his brother, former New York Governor Roswell Pettibone Flower. The hospital was founded to be a clinical setting for students of the New York Medical College to learn and practice medicine.

Born on June 20th of 1849 in Theresa, New York, Flower was considered a skilled, but quiet business man. He worked with his brother, Roswell Pettibone Flower, on the development and operation of their banking firm, Flower & Co., where he is thought to have been the mind behind some of the firm’s biggest successes.

He amassed a significant amount of wealth from his business ventures, and he used much of it for charitable donations and endeavors. He and his brother provided the financial capital to build and establish the Flower Free Surgical Hospital. The hospital’s affiliation with New York Medical College allowed medical students a setting in which to work with patients and practice medicine. He also is noted to have founded the Watertown Hospital amongst other charitable establishments
