Dr. Leonard Paul Wershub, M.D. (1901-1969) was a notable urologist and active participant in the workings of the New York Medical College. He earned many awards and honors from the college as well as from several other medical organizations and institutions.

Dr. Leonard Paul Wershub, M.D. (1901-1969) was a notable urologist and active participant in the workings of the New York Medical College as a student and faculty member.
Born in New York City in 1924, Dr. Wershub was a highly educated man. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Columbia and Yale in 1924 and his M.D. from the New York Medical College in 1927. After completing his internship at Beth Israel Hospital, Dr. Wershub returned to the New York Medical College to be a professor of Urology. During this time, he also was a consulting editor for The Chironian, the college’s magazine, as well as the president of the college’s Alumni Association. His work as a consulting editor for The Chironian makes perfect sense, as we was a prolific writer for topics pertaining to medical science and history.
Dr. Wershub was a member of the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons in addition to being an honorary member of the Surgical Academy of Madrid. His awards include the New York Medical College’s Alumni Medal in 1960 as well as earning the Selective Service Medal during World War II.
He was well known and well liked at the college, often considered recognizable by his large mustache. Dr. Wershub was a Professor of Urology, and president of the medical board for Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital, until his death from a sudden heart attack in 1969. His extensive personal library was donated to the New York Medical College after his death.
