Accessing the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) Database

A guide on accessing the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) and an overview of the qualities of the data set.

Requirements for Access via NYMC

All research projects/studies that involve the use of data from the Healthcare Utilization Project (HCUP) National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database must be submitted in the form of a research proposal to the NYMC IRB via MENTOR for consideration prior to the start of the study.  This will allow for determination of whether it requires IRB approval, or if it may be categorized as exempt from IRB review.  This will also provide documentation of IRB consideration for publication purposes.

The National Inpatient Sample is only available to NYMC students and faculty members using the process below. Other interested parties can purchase access directly from HCUP.

In order to access the HCUP National Inpatient Sample from NYMC, you must submit the following in the form below after you have your IRB approval:

1. The HCUP DUA training course completion certificate. Found at https://www.hcup-us.ahrq.gov/tech_assist/dua.jsp. Print out or save the certificate of completion for submission.

2. The Data Use Agreement for the Nationwide Databases https://www.hcup-us.ahrq.gov/team/NationwideDUA.pdf

3. The NYMC Voluntary Attestation for Use and Access to the HCUP. See below.

4. Documentation of IRB Review Status.
