Accessing the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) Database

A guide on accessing the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) and an overview of the qualities of the data set.

Requirements for Access via NYMC

The National Inpatient Sample is only available to NYMC students and faculty members using the process below. Other interested parties can purchase access directly from HCUP.

In order to access the HCUP National Inpatient Sample from NYMC, you must complete the following:

1. The HCUP DUA training course completion certificate. Found at https://www.hcup-us.ahrq.gov/tech_assist/dua.jsp. Print out or save the certificate of completion for submission.

2. The Data Use Agreement for the Nationwide Databases https://www.hcup-us.ahrq.gov/team/NationwideDUA.pdf

3. The NYMC Voluntary Attestation for Use and Access to the HCUP. See below.

4. Project Proposal. One to two-page proposal that outlines your research question, background literature, population, initial ICD-10 codes, and basic plans for data analysis. Make use of the Research Assistance and Documentation tabs on the left.

Once you have completed the requirements, you can submit your documentation via the form below.
