Research Services

About Us

The primary function of the User Support, Education & Research Services (USER Services) staff in the library is to assist members of the NYMC with their research through education, consultation, and provision of help in navigating the resources of the Health Sciences Library. It is our job to work with you to make sure the library is meeting your needs and that you can adequately use it.

Services

Ask A Librarian gives library users the ability to ask reference questions via the internet and have them answered by library professionals.  Chat is available during the library's service hours, and we aim to respond to all emails within two business hours.  Click on the Ask A Librarian here or on the Ask Us box on the upper right of this page.

Librarians are available to assist with research questions, to aid users in navigating the HSL collection, and to help with database searching, citation management, and technical solutions.  Visit the Reference desk or call (914) 594-4200 and ask for a reference librarian.

Each academic department has been assigned a library liaison, who serves as a bridge between the library and the department.  A liaison will be able to assist their department with the following:

  • Answering reference questions
  • Database & literature searching
  • Group or one-on-one instruction

To find out who your library liaison is, check out our Liaison Services guide here.

Reference Librarians are expert searchers who can do online database and manual searches for you.  To request a search, fill out the Literature Search Request Form

NOTE: The library may charge a fee for this service.  Rates are as follows:

  • NYMC Faculty, Staff, and Residents: FREE.
  • Unaffiliated users: $75.00 per hour ($20.00/ hour additional for rush requests).
  • Special Members: $45.00 per hour ($20.00/ hour additional for rush requests).

The librarians at the Health Sciences Library offer consultations to assist with searching and using information technologies (see our class listing for sample topics). Consultations can be in person or via Zoom, an online meeting software with screen sharing capabilities. Use this form to request a consultation with a Reference Librarian. Include as much information as possible. If it it easier for you, you can also request a consultation via phone: (914) 594-4200 (ask for the reference librarian) or email: hsl_nymc@nymc.edu.

Librarians are available to collaborate with researchers on systematic review projects.  They are especially equipped to develop and execute systematic review search strategies as suggested by the guidelines and standards set forth by: Finding What Works in Healthcare: Standards for Systematic ReviewsPRISMA Statementand the Cochrane Handbook.  Librarians may also work as part of the team to conduct searches, manage references, and write the methodology.  For more information on systematic reviews, click here.

Library classes are designed to help students, faculty and employees navigate the resources and products available at the HSL.  Librarian-led instruction sessions also boost competency in finding information and evaluating, synthesizing and applying information to produce a quality end product.  See our HSL Information Management Competencies.  The library offers instruction on using PubMedRefWorks, PowerPoint, MS Excel, and more.

To register for a class, fill out the Class & Instruction Request Form or browse our class list drop-down below and click on the guide's "I would like to take this class" button, which will then direct you the registration form.

Reference staff conduct special sessions with students, residents, and/or faculty upon request.  Topics may include database searching, evidence-based medicine, RefWorks, bibliographic formatting, and more. Faculty are encouraged to work with Reference staff to develop useful library sessions for their classes.  Librarians will conduct sessions at the Health Sciences Library, at other campus locations, or at clinical sites.

Contact either Deborah Crooke at (914) 594-3168 or Shawn Manning at (914) 594-4206 to request librarian sessions.

The Health Sciences Library is happy to offer tours of the library.  Please contact User Services via phone: (914) 594-3168 or via email:hsl_nymc@nymc.edu to arrange a suitable date and time.
