On September 18, 2019, the Health Sciences Library at New York Medical College held a lecture program to accompany Pictures of Nursing: The Zwerdling Postcard Collection, the National Library of Medicine traveling poster exhibit currently on display on the College campus. Reflecting on this exhibit, which uses examples from the NLM's Zwerdling Collection to illustrate how nursing profession has been represented in popular culture, our speakers connected these themes to the history of nursing here at New York Medical College.

Sandra Russo, Ph.D, R.N., chair and director of the nursing program at the Touro College School of Health Sciences, spoke on the recent history of nursing at Touro.

Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer of New York Medical College and provost for biomedical affairs of the Touro College and University System, spoke on the history of nursing as reflected in postage stamps, illustrated with examples from his own collection.

Sandra Lewenson, M.S., M.Ed., Ed.D., professor of nursing at the Pace University College of Health Professions and author of numerous books on nursing history including the award-winning Taking Charge: Nursing, Suffrage, and Feminism in America, 1873-1920, discussed themes in the history of nursing as reflected in the career of Frances Reiter, who served as director of nursing programs and dean of the graduate school of nursing at New York Medical College from 1960 to 1970.
