Dr. George S. Norton, M.D. (1851-1891), was an ophthalmologist who spent much of his career in service to the New York Homeopathic Medical College and its affiliated institutions.

Biography

Dr. George S. Norton, M.D. (1851-1891), was an ophthalmologist with extensive involvement in professional organizations of varying kinds. He contributed to the expansion of medical science as an educator, researcher and administrator.

Born in December 1851, Dr. Norton spent much of his life working with his alma mater and affiliated institutions. He graduated from the New York Homeopathic Medical College in 1872 and pursued a specialty in ophthalmology. In 1875, he began work as a surgeon at the New York Ophthalmic Hospital, an affiliate of the college. At the same time, he became a member of the medical board for Metropolitan Hospital, another affiliate of the college. He left the medical board of Metropolitan Hospital in 1888.

Dr. Norton’s more direct work with the New York Homeopathic Medical College began in 1886, when he became the President of the Alumni Association. As he was ending his time as president of the Alumni Association in 1887, he started in the position of Professor of Ophthalmology, and he held this role until his death in 1891.

Other notable positions held by Dr. Norton included his time as an editor of The Journal of Ophthalmology, Otology, & Laryngology, occurring from 1881891. Dr. Norton was also the librarian for the Homeopathic Medical Society in the years 1873, 1874, and 1890.

Dr. Norton wasn’t the only member of his family to be involved in the New York Homeopathic Medical College. His younger brother, A.B. Norton also attended the college and graduated with the class of 1881. His family further recognized Dr. George Norton’s commitment to the college by donating his portrait to the college on alumni day of 1912.
