It began in 2016 when a growing list of journals and publishers, including PLoS, Wiley, the American Chemical Society, EMBO Press and others, required authors to have an ORCID number. Soon, starting on January 25, 2020, the National Institutes of Health or NIH will require ORCID ID’s for researchers who are receiving research training, fellowship, education, and career development awards.
NIH Requirements
- Additional Instructions for Fellowship:
For NIH fellowship applications submitted on or after January 25, 2020, the personal profile associated with the fellowship applicant must include an ORCID ID (e.g., orcid.org/0000-0001-2345-6789) in order to pass NIH validation requirements.
- Additional Instructions for Career Development:
For NIH career development award applications submitted on or after January 25, 2020, the personal profile must include an ORCID ID (e.g., orcid.org/0000-0001-2345-6789) in order to pass NIH validation requirements
