Create a Touro Scholar Account

When do I need an account?

Although you can explore Touro Scholar and download materials without logging in, an account is needed to deposit your thesis/dissertation, save searches and use the Follow feature to stay up to date on authors or content. In addition, content restricted to NYMC and Touro affiliated individuals will require users to log in with an account.

How to Create an Account

  1. Select the My Account tab found on the top right-hand side of the page.
  2. Click the Sign up link.
  3. Enter the requested information. Please use your NYMC or Touro email address (if you have one).
  4. After you click Create Account, the system will confirm registration via email.

*You may already have an account if a site administrator or editor added you as a reviewer or author. In this case, you should go through the steps to create an account with the same email address they used to add you, then complete the sign-up process to finalize your account.

How to Log In

  1.  Select the My Account tab found on the top right-hand side of the page.
  2.  Enter your email address and password.

*If you forgot your password, click Forgot Your Password? to access the Reset Password screen.

Published Works

My work has been published in a journal or book. Can I still deposit my work in Touro Scholar?

Yes, you can deposit your work and we will check the copyright status for you before it goes live on the site. See Assisted Deposit for Full Text for more information.

If you prefer not to upload full-text, you can still deposit your citation only

Copyright Considerations

Copyright Considerations

Authors must sign a permission form prior to material being uploaded to the repository, granting the College the non-exclusive license to distribute and preserve the material via Touro Scholar.  If the author is a student, the signature of the faculty advisor or the principal investigator is required.

Posters require a different permission form which includes the title of the work and an embargo option.

Note: Unless otherwise noted, materials posted on Touro Scholar are the property of their respective authors.

Preprints and Postprints

I've heard a lot about preprints, postprints, author accepted manuscripts, and so forth. What are the differences between the various versions of my paper?

There are three versions of a scholarly article:

  1. Preprint: the original version of your article that you wrote and submitted to the journal.
    • Other terms: Author's Original Manuscript (AOM), Author's Original (AO), Submitted Version
  2. Postprint: the version of your article after peer-review but before the final publisher formatting. It should NOT look like the final version. It is typically a Word document.
    • Other terms: Accepted Manuscript, Author's Accepted Manuscript, AM
  3. Final version: the final, published version of your article with all of the publisher formatting. It will likely contain headers, footers, page numbers, typesetting, etc.
    • Other terms: Version of Record (VoR), Published Version, Published Article, Final Version, Final Published Version, Publisher PDF

Whether or not you are allowed to submit one or more of these versions to an institutional repository like Touro Scholar depends on your publisher's policies. The Touro Scholar team offers a faculty assisted submission process which provides a detailed rundown of permissions for your entire CV.

Supported Formats

What formats can I upload into Touro Scholar?

Touro Scholar recommends the use of particular file types in order to increase the likelihood of safely migrating these files in the future.

Most papers in Touro Scholar are in PDF. Word and RTF files are typically converted to PDF when they are imported into the repository.

For supplementary materials and non-paper collections, we recommend the following formats:

  • Images: JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF
  • Audio: AIFF, MP3, "unprotected" (DRM-free) AAC
  • Video: MPEG
  • Data: XML, Comma-separated values

Other formats may be included for supplementary materials, but are less likely to be migrated when technology changes. Submissions may be in a different format, but we recommend that the files be additionally made available in one of the above formats.

When technology inevitably migrates to new formats in the future, we will change the format of a file, but not the information in it. For example, the repository managers will not update hyperlinks, other external references, or out-of-date information within a paper or supplementary file.

Revisions

Some of the information about my work is incorrect. How do I revise it?

To revise a submission that has been posted to the repository, contact us with a link to the paper and a short description of the issue/revision, and we will take care of it for you.

Restrict Content

Can I restrict access to my work?

We can restrict access to the full text of your work to New York Medical College and/or Touro affiliated users who have a Touro Scholar account.

We can also embargo your work. An embargo allows you to restrict a specific item to everyone for a given period of time.

Please contact us to discuss your options.

Note: Metadata, such as title, authors and abstract, remain accessible to the public and is indexed by search engines.

Metrics

Where can I view statistics for my work?

There are two ways authors can view metrics in Touro Scholar - via article level metrics, with no need to create and account, or, via the Author Dashboard which is available to users with a Touro Scholar account.

Article-Level Metrics

Once your article is included in Touro Scholar, you can see the article-level impact including Altmetrics on the article record in Touro Scholar.

Follow these steps:

1. In Touro Scholar, search for the title of the article, click on the title in the search results.

2. On the right hand side of the article record, there are the following three icons, you can linger your mouse over the icon for a quick view or click on the icon to get more detailed information.

PLUMX links to specific policy citations, news articles, blogs, wikipedia references, and tweets that mention your article. You can also access citation and usage reports.

Altmetric additionally provides a Twitter map and Attention Score in Context so you can see how your article compares to others in your field.

Dimensions provides information about and links to citing references.

Author Dashboard

The Author Dashboard is available to authors who have created a Touro Scholar account.

The Author Dashboard provides regional and institional usage reports and maps for your works, PLUMX metrics reports, and other readership data.

To access your dashboard:

  1. Log in to Touro Scholar or create a new account.
  2. Under Dashboard Tools, select Author Dashboard.

For further assistance using your author dashboard, request a consultation with a librarian

Search Touro Scholar

How do I search for content in Touro Scholar?

You can search full text and descriptions of materials in Touro Scholar. If you prefer, you can narrow your search to a particular section of the collection.

Simple Search

The sidebar search will locate content that includes all of the terms you enter. The terms may be in any metadata field or in the full text of uploaded content.

Additionally, you may use the drop-down menu to specify content from only a single publication, from the repository as a whole, or across all repositories using bepress Digital Commons.

To save the results of a search, or to receive notifications of future content that matches your criteria, click the "Save this search" button. Creating an account is simple and free, and you may unsubscribe from notifications at any time.

Advanced Search

The default advanced search is set to "All Fields," which will query all the criteria used in a simple search. You may refine results using the drop-down menus provided, and use the +/- buttons to include additional criteria.

  • Date range limits results to content published within the specified period. The format for date range is MM/DD/YYYY - MM/DD/YYYY.
    • Example: 08/01/2001 - 08/01/2011.
  • Sort by automatically displays results in order of relevance (i.e., closest match), but may be changed to publication date if desired.

Tips

Special characters can enhance your results. Lowercase your terms in combination with the following:

  • Asterisks (*) within or at the end of a term function like multiple wildcards. Example: an All Fields search for l*nn will return results with lynn, linn, and lochlann.
  • Questions marks (?) within or at the end of a term function like single wildcards. Example: an All Fields search for l?nn will return results with lynn and linn, not lochlann.
  • Quotation marks (") around terms return exact phrase matches. Example: "cooler water" will return different results from "water cooler."
  • Tildes (~) at the end of a term return fuzzy matches. Example: colour~ will return results with colour, color, and coli.

Search supports some SOLR syntax as well. Proper capitalization of names is required with the following:

  • author_lname: The last name of an author can be specified. Example: an All Fields search for author_lname: Lynn will only return content by authors with the last name of Lynn.
  • author_fname: The first name of an author can be specified. Example: an All Fields search for author_fname: Lynn will only return content by authors with the first name of Lynn.

Commas will be ignored in any search. Instead, use the tips above to construct finely tuned queries, and then save your criteria using the "Save this search" feature.
