Mendeley

Folders in Mendeley Web

  1. Click on the "+ Create Folder…" link in the left sidebar.
  2. Enter a unique name for the folder.
  3. Hit Enter.
  1. Click on the three dots icon next to the folder you want to add to.
  2. Click on the "Add subfolder…" option from the drop-down menu.
  3. Enter a unique name for the subfolder.
  4. Click the OK button.

References in Mendeley Web

  1. Click on the reference you want to edit. Details about the reference will appear in the right sidebar.
  2. In the right sidebar, click on the Edit button.
  3. Change the information in the appropriate field(s).
    • NOTE: Be aware of what you edit in the reference as you cannot reset the field values once you save over them. To get the reference back to its original form, you will need to re-import it.
  4. Click the Save button.
  1. Click on the checkbox next to the appropriate reference(s).
  2. Click on the Delete tab in the top navbar.
    • NOTE: This only moves your items to the Trash, where they will stay until you permanently delete them.
  3. Click on the Trash tab at the bottom of the left sidebar.
  4. Click on the checkbox next to the appropriate reference(s).
  5. Click on the "Delete forever" tab in the top navbar.

Sharing/Groups in Mendeley Web

The create function for groups in Mendeley Web is currently disabled as the developers are working on updating it.

NOTE: You will only be able to join Public groups. Institutional groups are limited to members of a specific institution (e.g. school). Invite-Only groups will appear in the search but not display a Join button; to join an invite-only group, you will have to contact the group owner. Private groups will not appear in the search at all.

  1. From outside of your Library, click on the Search tab in the main toolbar.
  2. Click on the Groups option above the search box that pops up.
  3. Type in a group name or topic in the search box.
  4. Click on the Search button.
  5. Once you’ve found a group you want to join, click on the group’s name.
  6. Click on the Join button.

NOTE: Only group owners have the power to delete a group.

  1. Click on the Groups tab in the main toolbar.
  2. Click on the name of the group you want to delete.
  3. Click on the Settings tab.
  4. Click on the "Delete this group" link on the right-hand side of the page.
  5. Click the Continue button.

PDFs in Mendeley Web

You only have so much space available in your Mendeley account. In order to get more space, you will need to upgrade your subscription. You can check the amount of free space you have by going to the "Settings & privacy" option in your profile icon’s drop-down menu and then clicking on the Subscription tab in the left sidebar.

  1. Click onto the reference that you want to add a PDF to.
  2. In the Files section of the right sidebar, click on the "Click or drag file here" section.
  3. Select the file you want to add from your computer.
  4. Click the Open button.

  • Read: note that you need an internet connection to read PDFs in Mendeley as opposed to PDFs you save to your computer
  • Select Text: the A with a cursor icon next to it allows you to select text from a PDF, which you can then copy, highlight, or add notes to
  • Scroll: the hand icon allows you to scroll up and down in the document
  • Add Notes: the message icon with lines allows you to add your own notes that you can pop out or hide as needed; you can also change the color of the notes  
  • Highlight: the highlighter icon allows you to highlight the text; the colored dot next to the highlighter icon allows you to change the highlighter color
  • Download or Print: the three vertical dots icon gives you the option of downloading or printing your annotated document
  • NOTE: If you click on the profile icon at the right end of the Mendeley PDF reader’s top navbar, it will give you a link to the Settings of your account and a link to the Mendeley support site.
