Mendeley

Web Importer

Import papers, web pages and other documents directly into your reference library from search engines and academic databases. Mendeley Web Importer is available for all major web browsers.

Mendeley Web

  1. In Mendeley Web, click on the drop-down arrow icon in the upper, right corner of the main toolbar.
  2. Click "Download Mendeley" from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click the "Find out more" button underneath the "Web Importer" section.
  4. Click the "Get Web Importer for [browser]" button.
  5. Follow your web browser's instructions.

Mendeley Desktop

  1. In Mendeley Desktop, click on the Tools tab of the menu bar.
  2. Click "Install Web Importer" from the drop-down menu.
  3. Follow your web browser's instructions.
  1. Once you are on the web page/resource you want to save, click on the "Mendeley Web Importer" icon in your browser navbar. 
  2. Click on the folder icon to choose where you want the imported reference to live. Otherwise, all references will be imported into the "All Documents" folder.
  3. Click on the "+ Add to Mendeley" button.
    • NOTE: If there are other references on the page, Mendeley will also list them as well in case you want to import them too. 

General Notes on Word's Mendeley Cite

  • Mendeley Cite, the Word plugin for Mendeley, will be located as a subsection of the References tab of Word’s main navigation bar.
  • From there, you can log into your Mendeley account to insert in-text citations and bibliographies based on the references you have in your library.
  • You can also change the citation style of the document mid-writing, and it will reorganize your in-text citations and reference list accordingly.

Installing Word's Mendeley Cite

  1. Make sure that both Microsoft Word and Outlook are closed.
  2. In Mendeley Web, click on the drop-down arrow icon in the upper, right corner of the main toolbar.
  3. Click "Download Mendeley" from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click the "Find out more" button underneath the "Citation Plugin" section.
  5. Click the "Get Mendeley Cite" button.
  6. Follow your web browser's instructions.

Mendeley Desktop

  1. Make sure that both Microsoft Word and Outlook are closed.
  2. In Mendeley Desktop, click on the Tools tab of the menu bar.
  3. Click "Install MS Word Plugin" from the drop-down menu.

Word's Mendeley Cite Functions

  1. Place the cursor where you want the citation to be inserted. 
  2. Use the search box to search for your reference(s) by author, title, keyword, etc.
  3. Click on the "Insert [#] citation(s)" button.

  1. Click on the in-text citation you want to edit. Make sure that the citation is outlined by a blue box.
  2. An "Edit Citation" will appear over the search box in your "Mendeley Cite" sidebar.
  3. Click on the citation you want to edit.
  4. Insert the page numbers into the box next to the Page drop-down menu.
  5. Click the Done button.
  6. Click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the "Mendeley Cite" sidebar.
  1. Place your cursor where you want the bibliography to be placed in your document.
  2. Click on the More tab at the top right of the "Mendeley Cite" sidebar.
  3. Select the "Insert Bibliography" option.
  4. Click the Continue button.
  1. Click on the "Citation Style" tab at the top of the "Mendeley Cite" sidebar.
  2. Select the style you want from the list.
    • NOTE: If you do not see the style you want, you can search for it using the "Select another style…" link at the bottom of the list.
  3. Click the "Update citation style" button.
  4. The plugin will reformat your existing in-text citations and bibliography.
