Grants, Awards, Scholarly Opportunities and Leadership Opportunities

NBME Emerging Innovators Grant Program - DEADLINE: October 8, 2023

To empower aspiring leaders looking to make a lasting impact in medical education, NBME is piloting the new Emerging Innovators Grant Program. This grant is intended to support early- and mid-career medical education faculty or staff who share NBME's commitment to advancing equitable practices which foster a diverse and inclusive medical community. NBME seeks projects that promote innovative thinking and push the boundaries of medical education and assessment locally and/or nationally.

NBME will fund up to $25,000 in total for each accepted proposal. Four proposals that can be completed within a 1–2-year timeframe will be selected. Grants will be awarded to medical schools accredited by the LCME or the AOA/COCA; applications are accepted from principal investigators with appointments at LCME- and AOA/COCA-accredited medical schools.

Whether the proposed research or program implementation is completely novel, or new to your own setting, NBME encourages emerging innovators to apply for this new grant opportunity by Oct. 8, 2023. The 2023 call for proposals focuses on the theme of Promoting Equitable Assessment in Medical Education.

NBME encourages proposals from individuals and/or teams which include those who are minoritized and/or marginalized in medicine. Teams are also encouraged to include learners or trainees among their membership.

To learn more about the grant program and the submission requirements, you can visit NBME.org.

‘The CLASS Project’- Clinical Skills Assessment and Standardization Call for MORE Taskforce Group Members - DEADLINE: July 31, 2023

Background and Call for Self-Nominations

The AAMC Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) is pleased to announce a call for MORE Taskforce Members for the CLASS Project.

With the cancellation of Step 2 CS, there is a lack of direction to guide national standards regarding clinical skills assessment.  The purpose of this endeavor is to nationally crowd-source the collective knowledge of the medical educator community and to arrive at a meaningful definition of assessment of clinical skills.  The Project was successfully launched September of 2021 and is ongoing.

The CLASS Project has been divided into 6 main taskforces.  Each taskforce is responsible to evaluate different components of the overall Project.  These 6 taskforces are: Why, What, Who, How, When/Where, and Technology.

This call is specifically for the combined WHEN/WHERE Taskforces.  Those of you who signed up two years ago to join – please resign up and you will receive an email soon.  But we STILL need more people to join the project.

We are also creating a new Taskforce not in the original design - The PROFESSIONS Taskforce.

The charge of this newly designed Taskforce is to examine Professions outside of medicine (eg Business, Law, Engineering, etc) to understand what processes these professions may use for certification and how they examine people for competency.  The Taskforce charge is to think outside of medicine to learn from these other professions.

The work will be fast paced leading up to the Annual AAMC Learn Serve Lead Meeting, November 2023.

  1. WHEN
    1. What is the optimal timing for assessments?
    2. Should assessment be one time only or part of continuous professional development?
  2. WHERE
    1. Where will these assessments take place?  Locally or nationally?
    2. Where would International Medical Graduates have opportunities for assessment?
  3.  PROFESSIONS
    1. What can we learn about assessment of skills from other Professions?
    2. What processes are used in other Professions for standardization?

Call for Self-Nominations

ALL Educators, fellows, residents, and students across the continuum should indicate their interest in participation in this last phase of the CLASS Project by clicking on and completing the nomination form by July 31, 11:59 pm EST.  Additionally, you will be asked to submit a maximum 150-word statement regarding expertise and how you would contribute to the taskforce, its mission and diversity.
